Can You Camp at Tyneham?
By James Langton · Updated May 2026
Tyneham's peaceful setting on the Jurassic Coast makes it a tempting spot for an overnight stay, but camping inside the village itself isn't allowed — it's a preserved historic site within the Lulworth military range. Access to Tyneham is only possible on weekends and public holidays, and during school holidays, when the military range is open to the public.
That said, Tyneham makes an excellent base for a full day out. From the village car park you can explore the ruined cottages, visit St Mary's Church, and walk the easy mile down to Worbarrow Bay — one of the quietest and most beautiful beaches on the Jurassic Coast. There are no cafés in the village, so bring a packed lunch and make a day of it. The walk to Flower's Barrow hillfort above the bay offers panoramic views across the coast.

Camping Near Tyneham: What to Expect
Most of the best campsites near Tyneham are clustered around the Purbeck Hills and the Lulworth coast — roughly 5 to 12 miles away. None are within the military range itself, so you will need a car (or a good bicycle) to reach the village. The B3070 road through Lulworth is the main approach, and the car park at Tyneham is well signposted once you pass the range gate. Journey times from the sites below are typically 15–25 minutes.
Bear in mind that Tyneham is only accessible on certain days — weekends, public holidays, and school holidays when the range is open. If you are planning a visit around a specific day, always check the current opening times before setting off. The range gates can close with little notice during live firing exercises.

Making a Weekend of It
If you are camping in Purbeck for a weekend, Tyneham fits naturally into a longer itinerary. From a base at Lulworth Cove or Burnbake, you could spend one morning at Tyneham and walk down to Worbarrow Bay, return to camp for lunch, and spend the afternoon at Lulworth or on the coastal path to Durdle Door. A second day could take in Corfe Castle — a 20-minute drive through the hills — before catching the Swanage Steam Railway back to Corfe village.
There are no food or drink facilities at Tyneham itself, so pack a good lunch. The nearest cafés are in West Lulworth village, about five miles away. The range car park charges a small fee; arrive early in summer as the single-track road into the valley can get congested on busy bank holiday weekends.
Please check each campsite's website for current availability, facilities, and booking details — especially during peak season.
Before you book your pitch, check that Tyneham will be open on your planned visit dates — the village is only accessible when the military range is not in use. View the current 2026 opening calendar here.
