The site is written by James Langton, a Dorset-based heritage writer. ## About Tyneham Tyneham is an abandoned village in the Purbeck Hills of Dorset, England. In December 1943, the 252 residents were asked to leave their homes so the Army could use the surrounding land for wartime training. They were promised they could return after the war. They never did. The village and surrounding Lulworth Ranges remain Ministry of Defence land, open to the public on most weekends and during school holidays. ## Key Pages - [TynehamVillage.org Home](https://tynehamvillage.org/) — Visitor guide to Dorset's ghost village, evacuated in 1943 - [Opening Times 2026](https://tynehamvillage.org/opening-times/) — When Tyneham is open to visitors - [Visiting Tyneham](https://tynehamvillage.org/visiting-tyneham/) — Free entry, parking, postcode, and practical visitor information - [Where is Tyneham?](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-village-location/) — Location, directions, and parking - [Tyneham Village Map](https://tynehamvillage.org/map-of-tyneham/) — Interactive map of the village and its buildings - [Camping at Tyneham](https://tynehamvillage.org/camp-at-tyneham/) — Camping is not permitted in the village; the best nearby campsites - [Tyneham Village History](https://tynehamvillage.org/history-of-tyneham/) — History of the village from medieval times to the 1943 evacuation - [The Bond Family](https://tynehamvillage.org/the-bond-family/) — The squires of Tyneham for nearly 260 years - [The Church Door Note](https://tynehamvillage.org/the-church-door-note/) — The famous letter left by residents when they departed - [After the Evacuation](https://tynehamvillage.org/after-the-evacuation/) — What happened to Tyneham after 1943 - [Tyneham in Wartime](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-in-wartime/) — The WAAF radar operators, Tyneham House, and the 1941–43 occupation - [The Campaign to Return](https://tynehamvillage.org/the-campaign-to-return/) — The long fight to reclaim the village - [Dorset's Ghost Village](https://tynehamvillage.org/ghost-village/) — The story of England's most famous abandoned military village - [Tyneham Church](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-church/) — St Mary the Virgin, Tyneham - [Tyneham House](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-house/) — The manor house and its history - [Tyneham School](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-school/) — The village school, preserved as a museum - [Tyneham Post Office](https://tynehamvillage.org/the-post-office/) — The village shop and post office at No. 3 Post Office Row, its shopkeepers, the mail, and the last postmistress before the 1943 evacuation - [Tyneham Rectory](https://tynehamvillage.org/the-rectory/) — The 1853 rectory, now a roofless ruin near the church - [Tyneham Village Photos](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-photos/) — Historic and present-day images of the village - [Tyneham Remembered Documentary](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-remembered/) — The only filmed record of first-hand accounts from the last residents - [Worbarrow Bay](https://tynehamvillage.org/worbarrow-bay/) — The bay accessible from Tyneham - [Flowers Barrow](https://tynehamvillage.org/flowers-barrow/) — Iron Age hillfort above Worbarrow Bay - [Lulworth Range Walks](https://tynehamvillage.org/lulworth-range-walks/) — Walking routes from Tyneham across the Lulworth Ranges - [Gad Cliff](https://tynehamvillage.org/gad-cliff/) — Dramatic headland above Tyneham on the Jurassic Coast - [Wildlife at Tyneham](https://tynehamvillage.org/wildlife-at-tyneham/) — The valley's accidental nature reserve: deer, reptiles, and rare heathland birds - [Lulworth Cove](https://tynehamvillage.org/lulworth-cove/) — The famous Jurassic Coast cove - [Corfe Castle](https://tynehamvillage.org/corfe-castle/) — Norman castle ruins in the Purbeck Hills - [Durdle Door](https://tynehamvillage.org/durdle-door/) — Natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast - [Kimmeridge Bay](https://tynehamvillage.org/kimmeridge-bay/) — Fossil-rich bay on the Jurassic Coast - [Tyneham Circular Walk](https://tynehamvillage.org/tyneham-walk/) — Circular walk from Tyneham village to Worbarrow Bay and Flower's Barrow Iron Age hillfort, 4.5 miles - [Corfe Castle Circular Walk](https://tynehamvillage.org/corfe-castle-walk/) — 7–8 mile circular walk crossing the Purbeck ridge - [Kimmeridge to Tyneham Walk](https://tynehamvillage.org/kimmeridge-tyneham-walk/) — 7.5 mile South West Coast Path walk through the Lulworth Ranges - [About James Langton](https://tynehamvillage.org/about/) — About the author - [Contact](https://tynehamvillage.org/contact/) — Get in touch - [Privacy Policy](https://tynehamvillage.org/privacy/) — How visitor data is handled ## Key Facts - Tyneham is located in the Lulworth Ranges, near Wareham, Dorset (postcode BH20 5QH for the car park and sat-nav) - The village is open most weekends and during school holidays (check opening times for current dates) - There is no fee to enter the village; parking is on a voluntary donation basis at the car park - The church and school are preserved as museums and free to enter - The nearest town is Wareham; the nearest village is East Lulworth
